After 4 months of no FFGS events, the society returned at the hallowed links of Formby in February. A great turnout and some decent weather for a change, even if some of Formby’s bunkers remained waterlogged. That’s climate change for you. Some might say that 4 months without a society event was par for the course for me (lol)…
Playing partners Witterick and Foode Senior engaged in a tight matchplay battle, with Foode’s 19 handicap constantly yielding lots of head scratching, particularly as his Stealth driver was regularly finding the middle of the fairway. Witterick meanwhile, had his trusty 4 iron which boomed down the fairway.
Meanwhile, I plotted my way around as usual, a good 18 points on the front 9 and a booming drive on the 18th (longest drive hole), with VAR and the lines being drawn against Foode Junior’s drive. Foode Senior suggested my ball was closer (validated by Garmin watch) but the naked eye deceived, such that Foode Junior kept the honours, only for Dave Hadden to remarkably keep one on the fairway rather than the car park, and take the longest driver of the day.
Up ahead, Foode Junior was watching eagle eyed after clearly having a good round, only for my 2nd shot to 18 landing a few feet short and rolling up for a tap in birdie, which meant 37 points and a win on countback against Foode Junior. The usual groans of ‘Formby specialist’ etc in the clubhouse……but great to be out again with the society, some good company, good golf played and smiles all round.
Thanks and congrats to our winner, Andy Hanson
